Texas Ranks Among the Top Ten States in the Nation for Most Dangerous Drivers

According to a new Forbes article, Texas ranks among the top 10 most dangerous states to drive in. Certainly, the statistics reflect the size of the state, the number of motorists, and the fact that each year the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles registers around 24 million vehicles. This would make The Lone Star State much more likely to have increased accident, injury, and fatality statistics than, say, New Hampshire.

However, the study uncovers important details that our Houston car accident attorney, Charles J. Argento, already knows: Most of our state’s traffic crash fatalities were caused by negligent drivers, which could have been prevented.

What Do the Texas Traffic Facts Say About the State’s Dangerous Driving Behaviors?

According to the Texas Department of Transportation crash facts, based on reportable crashes last year, throughout the state there were:

  • One reportable crash occurred every 57 seconds
  • One person injured every 2 minutes 12 seconds
  • One person killed every 1 hour 57 minutes

The Forbes study stated 37% of all fatal accidents in Texas are caused by speeding. Worse, 45% of all fatal accidents in the state are caused by impaired driving. Our Houston personal injury lawyer knows that when motorists take their duty of care to keep other drivers and their passengers safe — and do not get behind the wheel while impaired or driving recklessly — our interstates, city streets, and rule roads are much safer places to travel.

Unfortunately, like other states, Texas motorists must also contend with distracted drivers who are causing increasing numbers of traffic collisions, injuries, and fatalities throughout the state. Last year, 433 people were killed in distracted driving accidents in Texas, and the trend does not seem to be going in the opposite direction.

It takes all motorists to look out for one another. We can start by putting down our phones, maintaining the legal speed limit, and never getting behind the wheel while impaired.
