On October 9, 2015, Brent Randall was heading to class at Texas Southern University when he was shot to death in his dormitory. Along with his half brother, who survived the shooting, Randall joined a long list of recent student victims of gun violence in and around the TSU campus.
Now, Randall’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the University, citing that the school was aware of the clear and present dangers posed to students, after a series of gun-related crimes in the same dorm building. According to the lawsuit, the University could have helped prevent these crimes, had it responded to the dangers and increased security measures accordingly.
The lawsuit further alleges that the University was irresponsible in failing to lock down the campus after another gun-related incident merely hours before Randall’s death. Though TSU has implemented a number of security measures in the wake of Randall’s death, his family maintains that none were in place at the time of the shooting.
In large cities like Houston, it is not uncommon for certain neighborhoods to see increased violent crime, such as gun-related incidents, in addition to other cases that result in serious personal injury or wrongful death. When this occurs, victims or their families may need the assistance of a qualified attorney.
