Early Thursday morning, December 23, 2021, firefighters extinguished a large fire at the Baytown, Texas ExxonMobil oil refinery.
Local authorities are calling the fire inside the facility located along the Houston Ship Channel a “major industrial accident.”
The refinery can process up to 584,000 barrels of crude oil each day. The company employs about 7,000 people and makes chemically based products like butyl for car tires and polypropylene for bumpers.
What Caused the Baytown ExxonMobil Explosion?
During what was believed to be an explosion at the plant, four people were injured, three of whom were airlifted, and one transported by ambulance, to local hospitals for treatment.
Officials with ExxonMobil said they are still unsure what caused the explosion, and that air quality monitoring has not revealed any issues.
Unfortunately, it may be too soon to tell how far-reaching the accident may be.
The Baytown facility experienced two explosions and fires in March and August of 2019 that required nearby residents to shelter at home.
